This teacher's pack will allow you to use the strikingly original play, 100 by Christopher Heimann to create and develop their own piece of devised drama. If you're not familiar with this play, it's an original play which is based upon the following premise: Imagine that you must choose one single memory from your life. Imagine that choosing this memory is your only way of passing through to eternity. Imagine that you have just one hour to choose... ' If you like visual, physical and slightly surreal theatre, this is a superb play to use with Edexcel's Component One. It will capture students' imagination and create some great, unusual drama pieces as students are left to think about what their 'one memory' would be.
Our new 100 Devising Resource Pack will allow you teach this great play in its entirety. It will provide you with a complete scheme of work to both explore this exciting play with sixth formers and to help create and stimulate students’ own innovative and dynamic drama. It contains numerous practical strategies and could be used as a great introductory scheme of work with sixth form groups to help prompt some interesting and original drama.
The teaching guide is centred around a series of lesson ideas. If you follow the six lessons from start to finish, you will be able to teach the play 100 in its entirety. Within these six main lessons (which could be broken up to last longer), there are six main devising tasks for students to follow. If you follow all of the lessons, you will cover the following aspects:
how to use Adolphe Appia's ideas about space and music,
Peter Brook and his physical theatre ideas,
Absurdist theatre techniques,
Brecht's ideas about breaking through the fourth wall,
Artaud's ideas of using a language of sounds, gestures, music and symbols,
Meyerhold's and his work on rhythms,
Drama techniques such as meta theatre within their own devised pieces.
Each lesson also requires students to write a reflective log of their learning and keep a detailed set of notes which could be used to inform their later devising ideas.
After following the scheme, students will have a wealth of knowledge ready for creating their own final devised piece based on an extract from this play and one of the practitioners they have looked at.
The photocopiable teaching pack contains detailed teaching notes, student handouts and one full copy of the play, 100 by Christopher Heimann.
