Quick Overview

“frighteningly funny”
“devishly entertaining”

What might a playwright need to create a play that’s perfect for young people? Well, a tiger, a child-eating man who lives in the wardrobe, a neurotic mother and lots of champagne truffles of course! This play is as strange and comical as it sounds and is definitely one that you should explore with your students.

Written by Christopher William Hill, Mister Holgado explores childhood imagination and the child-parent relationship. When Conrad believes he has a tiger living in his bedroom, his child psychologist father condemns such childish fantasies and instead plants the far more terrifying idea that it is the child-eating, false eyeball-selling Mister Holgado who lives in the wardrobe that the child should be more scared of.

The play explores Conrad’s fears, his parents’ control and the way in which children can often outwit us all. A fascinating mix of Eastern European influences, sinister shadows, fairground music, costume changes, Roald Dahl-type nonsense, Tim Burton style fantastical images and Kafka-like menace all combine to make a brilliant play. Here at EHd, we scour the world of theatre to find plays that will excite and inspire…and we think we’ve found a corker with this one.

Perfect for any secondary school classes, this play lends itself to your youngest students whilst also allowing you to explore the complex meanings and ideas with the eldest students. Mister Holgado will have your students laughing, holding their breath and perhaps even checking their wardrobes!
