Quick Overview

Not familiar with the play Enron? Here’s our writers’ thoughts….

Enron was awarded the Critic’s Circle Award for Most Promising New Playwright. Lucy Prebble’s play is currently being performed at London’s Noel Coward Theatre and is then on a UK tour. It has also opened on Broadway. The play focuses upon the financial collapse of the Texan energy giant Enron in early 2000-a topical subject given recent financial events in Britain.

It’s a play about greed and corruption within one of America’s largest companies. It shows the dangers of what happens when people become too ruthless in business. Yet despite its serious subject matter, it has many fun twists-such as the dinosaur-like ‘raptor’ characters and the three blind mice! It contains moments of comedy intertwined with moments that are reminiscent of a classical tragedy.

It’s a great play to teach with sixth formers because it is an energetic, fun and experimental play. It infuses music, sound and video to present scenes of chaos and panic. It’s a highly physical text and requires imaginative ensemble acting. It would be a great play to introduce students to the work of Brecht, because of its epic techniques such as direct address, projections, political messages and physical acting.

In terms of a teaching opportunities, the play opens up a spectrum of topics to introduce students to: stylised, physical theatre, Greek tragedies, Greek choruses, postmodern devices, political theatre, morality plays to name but a few. It’s a great text to teach because it opens up a host of teaching subjects that will not only allow pupils to gain a deep understanding of this text but will also broaden students’ understanding of theatre.
