Quick Overview

Whether you use these reading texts and questions as homework, during class work, for guided reading activities or before SATs tests, this book will provide you with a wealth of resources to help prepare your students for the demands of the reading paper.

When preparing your Year 6 students for the Reading SATs paper you always need a large stock of good reading comprehension activities. This brand new book contains a wealth of reading extracts and questions (with answers for teachers), ranging from fiction, non-fiction, poetry from a variety of traditions, times and genres. The photocopiable extracts will give your Year 6 students chance to compare characters, information and events in a text-a key feature of the new 2016 curriculum and the new SATs. Use these for guided readings, reading test practice or homeworks. They will prove invaluable as you start to prepare your class for the new, tougher, SATs reading paper next year. Why not slot one into your English lessons each week?

From experience, we know that reading practice for SATs can sometimes be quite arduous! Therefore, these reading texts have all been created to stimulate children's interest and help make reading comprehensions more fun. From an article that looks at the latest craze of the 'duffin' in Starbucks(the cake that's a cross between the doughnut and the muffin), to wildlife articles (which work great when taught alongside some great suggested BBC video clips on YouTube), through to interesting character analysis such as a short story called Pigeon Impossible about a secret agent who becomes embroiled in a battle with a pesky pigeon! (Again, this complements a great short animation video on You Tube). The reading texts have been designed to be fun and interesting whilst testing comprehension skills and they could even be used to prompt some great writing pieces.

Several of the texts are accompanied by further teaching suggestions for how to really bring the texts alive to children by providing great links to freely available videos on the internet which will coincide with the text and help let the children visualise the texts. These will help you teach reading analysis in an exciting, fun way as well as preparing children for the important skills needed in the SATs.

Each reading article is accompanied with teaching suggestions, a full teacher's mark scheme and some of the texts also have exemplar answers for you to use with your classes. The questions are differentiated and will provide varying levels of challenge for your mixed ability class.
