Download this free spelling bee to use with your Upper Key Stage 2 students.
Spelling bees are great ways to inject a little fun into spellings. We have taken some of the most commonly misspelled words and created a competition around them. It could be a great way to help boost literacy levels, or use just before SATs spelling tests.
How to play: These spellings will probably work best with your Upper Key Stage Two classes. The spelling bee can be run in a variety of ways. One way might be to ask everybody in Upper Key Stage 2 to learn the spellings and then each class select their 5 best spellers to represent them in the actual spelling bee competition. You could then hold the spelling bee competition during an assembly, for the rest of the school to watch.
Tips for success: pick some good prizes! Don't just reward the winners-perhaps provide prizes for those children who, whilst they might not have performed well, tried hard or demonstrated improvement in their spellings. Choose class prizes to encourage participation from as many possible-team points, extra play time, ice lollies for a class etc. If the bee is successful, why not let your Upper Key Stage 2 students run their own spelling bee with younger pupils?
