A great book to help introduce the concept of multiplication and times tables to Upper Key Stage One. Could easily link in to Literacy topics.
It would be good to start using in Year One to develop the concept of zero and what happens when you multiply by zero-Chapter 1 uses the idea of a witch using the magic zero spell to make things vanish...children could invent their own magic zero spells, Chapter 2 then slowly builds up to stories involving numbers being multiplied by one, or the witch starting to see double. Chapter 3 shows a comic strip about a 'triple scare' and then the comic strip about bats in Chapter 4 deals with 'foursight', ending with Chapter 5 where Bones the skeleton makes a Boo Stew, in which he is serving five people and so must multiply ingredients by 5.
Year 1 or Year 2 children will be entertained by the comic strip element and the characters: the witch, Mr Bones, bats etc. Great to use in literacy to help reinforce the beginnings of multiplication,
